Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
